Is shawarma halal?

It depends

Shawarma is a cooking method, not a halal guarantee — but in Ottawa, the large majority of dedicated shawarma shops use halal meat, and many are certified.

Shawarma itself — marinated meat roasted on a vertical spit — is neither halal nor haram as a dish. What matters is the meat's sourcing and slaughter. In Ottawa's dedicated shawarma shops, halal beef and chicken are the norm and many operators publish certification.

The caution cases are food courts, gas-station counters and non-specialist restaurants that added a shawarma item to a mixed menu: there the meat may not be halal and cross-contamination is likelier.

Our verified directory lists Ottawa shawarma operators whose halal claims we have cross-checked, including several certified kitchens — see the shawarma guide for the current list.

We label a restaurant halal only when the operator publishes the claim through its own channels (website, menu, signage or certifier listing) and we can cross-check it against at least one independent source. "Not verified" does not necessarily mean a restaurant serves no halal items — it means we have found no published halal program to verify, so we cannot call it halal.
