Is donair halal?
Same answer as shawarma: the dish isn't inherently halal — the meat sourcing decides it. Ask each shop; several Ottawa donair and doner kitchens are verified halal.
Donair (and its Turkish cousin, döner) is spit-roasted meat — usually beef in the East-Coast Canadian style. Whether a given donair is halal depends entirely on the shop's meat sourcing.
Halifax-style donair shops outside the halal market often use non-halal beef, so don't assume. In Ottawa, verified options exist: German Doner Kebab in Centretown runs a certified halal program, and many Lebanese shawarma kitchens serve donair-adjacent wraps with halal meat.
We label a restaurant halal only when the operator publishes the claim through its own channels (website, menu, signage or certifier listing) and we can cross-check it against at least one independent source. "Not verified" does not necessarily mean a restaurant serves no halal items — it means we have found no published halal program to verify, so we cannot call it halal.
